Béal Boru

Béal Boru, Brian Boru's Fort, Killaloe, County Clare

Béal Boru (Real Boru) or Brian Ború’s Fort lies outside the town of Killaloe on the road to Scariff in County Clare. Archaeological excavations have shown that the fort was a simple homestead or ring fort which was occupied in the 10th and 11th centuries. It was originally the site of an Iron Age Ring Fort at the head of Lough Derg.

Today to look at it, it is a large circular structure consisting of two built up rings. This is where Brian Ború, his family and the Dal gCais army had their base. The location is in a spectacular setting overlooking Lough Derg on the River Shannon just one mile from the village of Killaloe.

Brian Boru (Bryan Boru) was reared in this magical location where the lake narrows into the River Shannon. There is a tranquil beauty and seclusion amongst the tree ring fort which was at one time the fort of Brian Boru.

Taking a kilometre trek down a grassy pathway from the Killaloe-Scariff road through a wooded area, the site is impressive in size from the outside of the banks and is in good condition.
